Looking for a California design job? Toy company Mattel is seeking a packaging designer with 5-8 years of experience to join their in-house creative team.
Mattel, Inc. is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Project Packaging Designer to join its Entertainment Brands package design team. The Entertainment team focuses on delivering exciting innovative packaging designs for a wide range of brands such as WWE, Batman, and more. This team is focused on creating new and innovative packaging concepts for the boys division; by understanding the consumer, the product and design trends and technologies that are then translated into successful and effective communication. This involves creating and communicating concepts in 2D and/or 3D models to packaging, design and marketing management. The ideal candidate has a proven track-record in package design, is an accomplished verbal and written communicator and knows how to contribute in a cross-functional team environment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary function of the Package Designer is to create Brand Statements through innovative package designs.
- Design and develop packages from concept to production
- Create package concepts & brand statements that are on or above trend
- Work with design manager(s) to further develop designs
- Effectively communicate product statement and features through package design and photography
- Work with copywriter & structural engineer to create cohesive packaging/brand statement
- Partner with product design & marketing counterparts to ensure packaging celebrates product features and benefits and satisfies marketing strategies
- Art direct photo shoots (product and/or talent)
- Art direct in-house & outside resources such as illustrators, photo re-touchers, and other artisans to develop elements of package, from illustration and logo design to typography and line art, when necessary
- Build comp packages for presentations and trade shows
- Communicate with HK counterparts to ensure quality and integrity of package design is maintained through development, production and onto shelf.
- Versed in the competitive landscape and uses that knowledge to make strategic decisions

- Passion for design
- Creative thinker that strives for innovation
- In-depth knowledge of Photoshop & Illustrator
- Ability to see large picture while not losing focus of details
- Team player (ability to work with direct & indirect team members)
- Ability to take and give creative direction
- Up to date on current trends (graphics, advertising, fashion, cosmetics, entertainment, etc.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects in order to meet tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills
