healthy styleWith recent advances in women?s sports medicine, girls and women can learn to safely take part in any sport or type of exercise they choose. While some people start getting interested in sports medicine only after they?ve had an injury, you should also learn as much as you can as a preventative measure, so you can avoid problems in the future. Even though each sport has different risks so does each player of that sport which is why it?s so important to make sure you are listening to your body.

Finding a physician who specializes in women?s sports medicine is important for any woman who is going to exercise or participate in sports regularly. Some believe that these doctors are only necessary after an injury, but the fact s that a sports medicine specialist can offer advice to help you prevent injuries. If you have areas that are more problematic for you, such as your knees or back, a sports medicine doctor can give you proper advice on treating and preventing recurrence of these conditions.

If you do have a serious injury, these are the doctors who can suggest the best course of treatment. One thing to consider when choosing a sports medicine physician is whether or not he/she is experienced and respected in his field (a good reputation counts). Men and women are both susceptible to a common sports-related injury like a stress fracture. These are very small breaks in bones, and usually occur from repetitive stress activities, such as running or jumping. These breaks normally occur in the lower half of the body, such as the feet or legs. This problem can also occur in the arms if you engage in repetitive activities such as rowing or pitching. Building up your tolerance and endurance gradually is a great way to prevent this injury when starting a new activity. Make sure to see a doctor promptly if you suspect any kind of fracture.

Nutrition plays a large role in sports medicine, and women can prevent and even reverse many conditions by paying attention to their diets and adding certain supplements. Maintaining bone health is very important for women, so they need to make sure they are getting enough calcium. MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin are normally found together in a formula, are very helpful if you are active. Supplements that are good for your heart and bone health are fish oil capsules. You will have stronger bones by eating a healthy and balanced diet and taking some supplements. The information above gives us a clear picture of the fact that women?s health and sports medicine covers a wide range of conditions. It?s easier to prevent the conditions when you have a greater awareness of them to begin with. If any of these happen to you be sure to seek medical advice rather than getting discouraged. Just take it one day at a time and allowing yourself time to heal.

Tucson filmmaker nabs Sundance audience award

A seven-minute short film warning of the perils of catnip has won the Short Film Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Tucson filmmaker Jason Willis captured the prize with "Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?," a tongue-in-cheek take on drug education films.

"I'm completely dumbstruck and amazed!," Willis wrote on Facebook.

"Catnip is all the rage with today's modern feline, but do we really understand it?" Willis wrote in the film's press kit. "Is it a source for harmless kicks, or a potentially crippling addiction?"

"Once and for all the facts about this controversial substance are frankly discussed," Willis said, calling his project a "long-lost educational film that never was."

Shot for a budget of just $25, the film features deadpan narration on the pitfalls of nepetalacton cycloalkane, vintage "psychedelic" special effects, and interviews with wild-eyed feline aficianados of the potent plant, which reportedly comes in such strains as Mau Mau Nip Nip and Persian Haze.

Willis is a designer and musician as well as filmmaker, and performed in such standout Tucson punk bands as the Weird Lovemakers and the Knockout Pills.

The punny short is also replete with subtle shoutouts to some of Willis' fellow local punk rock pioneers ? watch and see how many you can spot.

"Catnip" has been watched nearly 350,000 times on Youtube.

"I won this based on the traffic and hits sent to YouTube, so honestly it's totally because of all of you guys ? the links that you shared completely made this happen. Fucking madness!," Willis wrote on Facebook. "Now I'm going to open a bottle of wine."

Horse enthusiasts look to revive youth interest - The Western Producer

Numbers declining | New initiatives launched to revive interest and participation among children under 13

RED DEER ? Singer Willy Nelson once crooned that his heroes were always cowboys, but that is not likely the case anymore for young people.

This changing interest has had a profound impact on the equine industry because fewer people are interested in riding and owning horses.

Longtime horse breeder and trainer Frank Merrill said horse organizations have not been quick to respond to the waning interest and there is a chance the horseman will be a vanishing breed across North America and Europe.

?We have learned in the last 12 months we have a 30 percent decline in youth participation in the horse industry,? he said.

The past-president of the American Quarterhorse Association attributes the lack of interest to aging horse breeders, economic challenges and children of baby boomers finding other activities.

He believes baby boomers were interested in horses because they were fans of movie and television westerns and admired actors such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. They also knew the names of their horses.

?Now our children are interested in other things,? he told the Alberta Horse Breeders Conference in Red Deer Jan. 15.

The AQHA has launched several programs to draw children back into the horse world. Equine Canada also announced a new program to rebuild the industry and support equestrian sports to encourage more young people to join at the recreational and competitive levels.

The AQHA is launching an online program called Digital Oats, which offers games, crafts and information about horses.

Many of today?s riders are middle-aged women. The association has also found that 80 percent of young people interested in horses are girls. It has decided the new target group could be children aged three to 13.

The concept would also collaborate with the scouting movement or 4-H because both offer horsemanship components.

The association has found that children younger than 13 spend less than five hours a week in sports or outdoor activities, but many sit for as much as 48 hours per week in front of a screen, including phones, tablets, computers and televisions.

?You can see immediately what our problem is,? he said.

The association believes 20 million of the 75 million young people in the United States are potential clients. Five million of them are younger than five.

The most likely participants are children from two parent families with incomes of more than $100,000 per year who live in or around medium to large cities. They need to already like outdoor activities and live from the Midwest to the Rockies.

In Canada, the program would probably target children in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

The AQHA has provided $1 million to support Digital Oats, but Merrill believes it will take millions of dollars to keep the industry afloat. However, he said it has to start somewhere as registrations fall and more people lose contact with horses.

?This program is non-denominational. It is not about the Quarterhorse,? he said.

?We want anybody who is involved with the equine to be involved with this.?

AQHA registrations in Canada and the U.S. have dropped 60 percent since 2004: from 195,000 to 85,000.

Tara Gamble, president of the Alberta Equine Federation, said the faltering economy has affected all forms of recreation, and affordability is an issue for many.

Fewer horse shows are held and some events have looked at lowering their entry fees so that people return.

?There is a price point people are willing to pay,? she said.

Sixty percent of those involved with horses in Alberta in 2009 were children. That has since reversed, and more adults, particularly women, are now involved with horses. Most of them are between 35 and 45, Gamble said.

Alberta horses numbers are also declining, and it is estimated there are 250,000 to 300,000 horses in the province.

12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter | Westlake ...

green home 300x192 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! Westlake Village Real EstateHeating, cooling and lighting our houses belches out a third of our carbon dioxide and sucks a lot of money out of our wallets in the process. There are so many guides and websites that tell you what to do fix this from insulating your walls to changing your windows. But if you are into frugal green living, what should you do first? What is the most effective thing to do? What gives the most bang for your buck?

A few years ago the Rocky Mountain Institute came up with the Cool Citizens Guide where they not only suggest what should be done but they calculate a cost per ton of carbon saved so you can tell what is the most effective place to put your money.

It isn?t a new document and we are talking 1992 dollars, but it is the relative cost per ton saved that is important. It is old enough that some numbers are probably off; changing bulbs to CFLs is relatively expensive, as electricity was cheaper then and bulbs a lot more costly.

For example, changing windows is expensive and costs $133.88 per ton of carbon saved; changing to a programmable thermostat is cheap and comes in at $ 9.34 per ton of carbon saved. So before the vinyl window salesman tells you to fix your windows, do all of the cheap and effective stuff first. second- do all the free and effective stuff first:

Free Stuff:1. Lower water heater temperature to 120?F2. Increase AC thermostat by 3?F3. Wash clothes in cold water4. Air dry clothes during summer5. Turn off unneeded lights

Just doing that will save 1600 tons of carbon and $250 per year. ::Green Your Home for Winter: Where To Starthunter programmable thermostat 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! Westlake Village Real Estate
6. Get a Programmable Thermostat: $9.34 per ton CO2 saved

a setback, or programmable thermostat has the biggest bang for the buck of any single thing you can do; it costs only $9.34 per ton of carbon saved, and is getting better all the time as the price of the electronics drop. A setback thermostat can save up to 15 percent on your heating bill.

For houses with radiant floors or old hot water radiator systems, there is a really slow response time because of the thermal inertia in the systems. I used to say that setbacks wouldn?t work for these, but new thermostats track the performance of your heating system, figure out when to turn it on, and basically plan ahead. After all, nothing makes you want to jump under the covers than a cool house before you go to bed!::Morewheretocaulk 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! Westlake Village Real Estate
7. Stop the Air Leaks: $10.77 per ton CO2 saved

Next up on the RMI Guide is to seal large air leaks, cheap to do (mostly labor, minimal materials), costing a mere $ 10.77 per ton of carbon saved. In an old, pre-1945 house, the air leaks can add up to the equivalent of a hole in your wall 21 inches in diameter! Natural Resources Canada (NRC) says that in a house vintage 1946-80 the hole is 16 inches, and in a modern conventional home, 14 inches. When you think about it that way it becomes obvious that there is a lot of heat loss, it is like leaving a window open all winter. ::More

8. Insulate Your Water Heater: $12.66 per ton CO2 Saved

Here we have a really easy one, that costs only $ 12.66 for every ton of carbon saved. You can buy kits at hardware stores or the big boxes like Home Depot or Lowes, that come with straightforward instructions. ::More 2007 11 07 123723 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! 9. Add Attic Insulation: $ 15.56 per ton CO2 Saved

Many houses have attics that are accessible via a hatch in the hall or a cupboard; if you have this, insulating your attic is not that hard, and delivers a good bang for the buck; RMI estimates it will save you 2,142 pounds of CO2 per year, at a cost of $15.56 per ton. We think R-50, or about 16? of glass fiber insulation is a good target. Glass fibre is cheap, relatively easy to install, and noncombustible, so we will look at that first but it is not your only option. ::Morenecoshowerheadpg 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! 10. Install Efficient Showerheads: $18.02 per ton of CO2 Saved

Almost as easy as wrapping your water heater, changing your shower head costs only $18.02 for every ton of carbon dioxide saved, and saves you $21 per year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that showers use about 17 percent of residential water use, totaling 1.2 trillion gallons per year. ::Morewindow film 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! 11. Weatherize Your Windows: $25.02 per ton of CO2 Saved

If you live in the north in a drafty old house, this is an important one. The window salesman may tell you that you have to replace those old wood windows, but they are often part of the character and charm of the house, the replacements are usually vinyl, and it costs a lot of money.

RMI suggests that weatherizing your old windows will save 621 pounds of carbon at a cost per ton saved of $25.02; I suspect it is much more money saved than that. These instructions are for double-hung windows, but they work for most kinds. The products I use are a seal and peel caulk (wonderful stuff; no matter how bad you are at caulking it just peels off in the spring) and heat-shrinking film. I lust after magnetic interior storms but that is more expensive. ::More aerator facuet 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! Westlake Village Real Estate

12. Install Faucet Aerators: $27.27 per ton of CO2 Saved

After spending the weekend winterizing our windows, next up on the RMI list is dead easy by comparison and cheap too; saving $6.22 and 110 pounds of carbon, at a cost per ton saved of $27.27. I am frankly surprised that such a little step does this much at all, but by mixing air with water you use less water and that means less water heating. ::More

On a bang-for-your buck basis, it all goes up from there.

rmi table 2 12 Ways to Keep Your Home Green For The Winter! Westlake Village Real Estate

It doesn?t mean you shouldn?t do them; some are cheap (like cutting phantom power loads in half, costing $128 per ton but cheap to do) and some are really expensive and not that effective (like adding low-e films to existing windows, topping the list at $241 per ton of CO2 saved). It is not always intuitive, but it is useful if you are trying to live a frugal green life.Other ideas for greening your house for winter, without cost per ton:Reduce Home Energy Use, Without Spending a CentFind Money to Winterize Your HomeDe-lint Your Dryer

North Korea will target 'sworn enemy' U.S. with nuke test

In a bellicose statement singling out the United States as the "sworn enemy" of the Korean people, North Korea today announced plans for a third nuclear test and continued rocket launches.

The move is seen as a disappointment to those who hoped the country's new leader, Kim Jong-Un, might take a less aggressive path than his predecessor and father, Kim Jong-il.

It is also seen as a direct challenge to President Obama and South Korea's newly elected president, Park Geun-hye, who takes office next month.

The statement from North Korea's National Defense Commission read:

"Settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival."

The renewed threats come in response to the U.S. backed resolution tightening sanctions against North Korea after its December rocket launch.

At that time, North Korea repeatedly insisted that the launch was simply part of its peaceful space program. The recent statement made no mention of that.

It read: "We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States."

South Korean officials analyzed debris from the December launch that, they say, indicates North Korea built and tested crucial components for a missile that can fly further than 6,200 miles.

Analysts say that preparations at the Pungyee test site in northeastern North Korea are underway and that a new underground test could take place on short notice.

Within the international monitoring community it is not believed that North Korea currently has the capability to launch a long-range rocket with the capacity to reach the United States or the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile. But the U.S. is not pleased with North Korea's plans. Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy to the region, said in Seoul, "We hope they don't do it. We call on them not to do it."

China, North Korea's main ally in the region, is also urging restraint. China backed the U.S. resolution at the United Nations and today the Foreign Ministry cautioned North Korea not to take further steps to increase tension.

Website Strategic Plan ? Part 3 ? Content Strategy

Looking ahead to 2013 you are going to need new content ideas for website content, blog posts, social media posts and maybe other online marketing plans like email newsletters.

The best advice we can give you is the more you plan what to write now,? the easier it will be to execute your website plan throughout 2013.? To help with your planning,? here are some possible ideas of what to write about:

  • Google Analytics Keyword Report for 2012 ? look at the data from your own website from last year,? do you see any topics that visitors to your site were looking for that you could further explore?
  • Search function on your website ? Does your website have a search box?? Can you pull the data on what people typed into this box?? This would be a great source of content that users were trying to find on your site but having trouble.
  • Wordtracker Question Tool ? A fun tool that will suggest a list of questions that users have submitted to search engines.? Maybe your website content could be the source of those answers?
  • Google Free Keyword Tool ? You can type subjects in the keyword suggestion tool and it will suggest a list of other related keywords.? Look for the keyword phrases that are in the form of a question.

Post with a Purpose

You need to keep your website updated, but don?t post just for the sake of posting something. That?s just busy work. If you use keyword data, information from your alerts and suggestions from customer service, that content will start drawing visitors to your
site on its own and eventually lead to more business for you.

Reinventing the Later Stages of Your Chemistry Career ? ACS ...

Events of the last several years: large-scale restructuring of the pharmaceutical industry, processing of cheap U.S. natural gas, outsourcing of jobs, the recession and other factors, are forcing many chemists to reinvent their careers. This includes those of you in the later stages of your career. For this purposes of this blog, I?ll call these later stages ?phased withdrawal from full-time employment.? We definitely need a word to refer to this phase of life. I checked various dictionaries and thesauruses and they offer no help at all. So in the absence of an accepted term and to avoid clumsy phrases, I?ll use the words ?retiree? and ?retired.?

Del Webb Corporation, America?s largest builder of retirement communities, conducts periodic surveys of people 50 years of age and over to determine their interests in what used to be called ?the retirement years.? In 2010 nearly 40% of current ?retirees? reported they were actually working. Finances are certainly one reason but others included warding off boredom/keeping busy, self satisfaction, and simple enjoyment. There was also high interest in volunteering. Reasons for this interest include the ones given previously plus ?for the enjoyment, feels good, and to help others and give back to the community.?

The growing percentage of baby boomers working in what traditionally has been called their retirement years offers a major opportunity for companies and other organizations that would benefit greatly from tapping their skills. These boomers need not compete with younger and mid-career chemists but instead offer valuable advice and even mentorship.

So what are the options for chemists in both traditional and non-traditional careers?

Back to campus

Many colleges and universities offer their standard courses for non-credit to retired individuals. Many schools allow their alumni to attend these courses for free. (This was a major factor in my considering relocating to Chicago last year.) Besides allowing chemists to pursue long-postponed interests (put me down for history courses), retired chemists can keep their scientific knowledge up to date. They can also take courses to improve other work-related skills such as writing and public speaking. Another option is to improve one?s public speaking skills by participating in Toastmasters clubs.

One can also do other things on campus besides being a student, such as attending lectures by outside speakers. In the case of chemists, these speakers are often outstanding chemists from other universities in North America and even overseas. By being active in your ACS local section, you may be able to develop the contacts or networks necessary to be invited to speak occasionally on campuses about various aspects of industrial chemistry, job hunting and other subjects. I am only one of many ACS career consultants invited to campuses to speak on job hunting and careers.

Part-time work

In an effort to maintain access to their older employees? expertise, some companies are offering them the option of working part time or even hiring them back on a contract basis. Senior employees now have a way to transition gradually to full-time retirement, often at their own pace, while their employers maintain access to their hard-won expertise. In an American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) survey of 1,000 human resources managers, 69% indicated their firms are trying to keep older workers on staff as part-time employees. For example, Abbott Laboratories ?Freedom to Work? program allows older employees to continue to work part-time. Since its launch in 2008 more than 400 Abbott employees have participated in the program.

According to Lesli Morasco, a Director of Benefits at Abbott, this program doesn?t interfere with younger employees? career advancement. Indeed, being mentored by a part-time Senior Researcher can help younger employees take on bigger and more complex projects. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Director of Boston College?s Sloan Center on Aging & Work suggests that having a highly experienced researcher as a mentor to train a newly hired scientist can help that person master their job responsibilities more quickly.

Companies can even access the knowledge of retired scientists and engineers who spent their careers working for other companies by working with placement firms such as YourEncore (http://acscareers.wordpress.com/tag/retirement/). In many cases these part-time scientists and engineers work out of their home offices rather than relocating to another city.

Professional societies

Professional societies offer another means to remain involved in various aspects of chemistry, such as The American Chemical Society (ACS). Technical divisions and local sections within ACS offer many opportunities for retirees to organize programs and manage other activities to help these organizations better serve their members. Other organizations such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers, National Association of Corrosion Engineers and American Association for the Advancement of Science and other groups offer similar opportunities for chemists working in various specialized and interdisciplinary fields. Trade associations such as the American Oil Chemists Society and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of American also offer volunteering opportunities.

John Borchardt is a chemist and freelance writer who has been an ACS career consultant for 15 years. He is the author of the ACS/Oxford University Press Book ?Career Management for Scientists and Engineers.? He has had more than 1500 articles published in a variety of magazines, newspapers and encyclopedias. As an industrial chemist, he holds 30 U.S. and more than 125 international patents and is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed papers. As an ACS Councilor, he serves on the Joint Board ? Council Committee Patents and Related Matters.

(AP) ? Germany's center-left opposition won a wafer-thin victory over Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition in a major state election Sunday, dealing a setback as she seeks a third term at the helm of Europe's biggest economy later this year.

The opposition Social Democrats and Greens won a single-seat majority in the state legislature in Lower Saxony, ousting the coalition of Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union and the pro-market Free Democrats that has run the northwestern region for 10 years. The same parties form the national government.

The 58-year-old Merkel will seek another four-year term in a national parliamentary election expected in September. She and her party are riding high in national polls, but the opposition hoped the Lower Saxony vote would show she is vulnerable.

The outcome could boost what so far has been a sputtering campaign by Merkel's Social Democratic challenger, Peer Steinbrueck.

"This evening gives us real tailwind for the national election," said Katrin Goering-Eckardt, a leader of Steinbrueck's allies, the Greens. "We can and will manage to replace the (center-right) coalition."

However, the close outcome also underscores the possibility of a messy result in September, with no clear winner.

Before Sunday's election, the main question had been whether the Free Democrats, whose support has eroded badly since they joined Merkel's national government in 2009, would win the 5 percent needed to gain seats in the state legislature. Polls over recent months had suggested that they might not.

The Free Democrats won 9.9 percent of the vote, thanks to tactical voting by supporters of Merkel's conservatives. Many chose the smaller party so that the coalition's "good policies for solid budgets, safe jobs and good education could be continued," said the general secretary of Merkel's party, Hermann Groehe.

Despite the popularity of David McAllister, the state's CDU governor, that helped push down the conservatives' support to 36 percent from 42.5 percent in Lower Saxony's last election in 2008. They finished as the biggest single party but fell short of expectations.

The combination of the CDU and Free Democrats has now lost control of four states since the smaller party joined Merkel's government in 2009.

At national level, the alliance has developed a poor image, with the Free Democrats taking much of the blame for frequent government infighting. Merkel and her party, meanwhile, have been bolstered by a relatively robust economy, low unemployment and the chancellor's hard-nosed handling of Europe's debt crisis.

Sunday's vote may calm intense recent speculation over whether the Free Democrats will force out their embattled leader, Vice Chancellor Philipp Roesler, whose home state is Lower Saxony.

Roesler proclaimed Sunday "a great day" for his party.

Merkel also has profited so far from stumbles by Steinbrueck, a former finance minister who drew criticism in recent weeks for saying that the chancellor earns too little ? adding to the controversy over his own high earnings from speeches.

His party improved a little on its feeble performance five years ago in Lower Saxony, polling 32.6 percent. Its allies, the Greens, made bigger gains, to 13.7 percent. That gave them 49 and 20 seats, respectively, in the state legislature in Hannover; the CDU took 54 and the Free Democrats 14.

Opposition leaders argued that their overall gains and the losses for the center-right showed that a change to a center-left government is possible in Berlin, despite unpromising recent polls.

Steinbrueck conceded that his recent troubles hadn't helped, though.

"I am well aware that there was no tailwind from Berlin, and I am also aware that I bear a certain share of responsibility for that," he told supporters. He said he felt "a certain amount of relief" at the result.

Two parties that have drained support from the center-left over recent years, the Left Party and the Pirate Party, failed to get enough votes Sunday to enter Lower Saxony's legislature.

A change of government in Lower Saxony will give opposition parties a majority in Parliament's upper house, which represents Germany's 16 states.

Though that has limited practical effect, it would enable the Social Democrats and Greens to showcase their plans for Germany by sending policy initiatives to the lower house ? controlled by Merkel's coalition ? on issues such as their call for a mandatory national minimum wage.

However, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to build up momentum and prevent Merkel keeping power ? possibly by finding a new coalition partner.

With eight months left before the national vote, "so much can change that I'd just say we should be careful about projecting such results onto the national level," Lothar Probst, a political scientist at the University of Bremen, told Phoenix television.

Taking Pets to Hawaii ? Quarantine Not Required, But It Is an ... - Blogs

A bit of work to get here, but oh so worth it!

As I sat in the Honolulu Animal Quarantine waiting room with several other equally frazzled pet owners, a very unfortunate young man was trying to get his dog released but lacked the ability to pay the $165 fee.? He explained how he?d lost everything to theft, didn?t have the cash or i.d. needed, and couldn?t get to a friend on the island and back in time to keep from having his dog moved to the quarantine station.? He was upset but pleasant, the officials were empathetic, but it was a no go.

At that point the woman sitting next to me ? who herself had experienced an arduous journey with a dog and cat ? asked how much money he needed. Tired, aggravated, and flushed from the heat she muttered something under her breath then stood up, walked over to the window and said (with an expletive or two) that she would pay for the release of the dog.? Without pause she counted out the cash as we cheered.? She accepted the gratitude and a hug from the young man, and when he offered to pay her back she just told him to pay it forward.

That generous and kind person is now becoming a resident of Hawaii, and she is a stellar example of the type of person who would never have come here had the new rules not made it possible for her to bring her pets, leaving the state poorer for turning away people like her.? So why is it difficult for pet owners to move to Hawaii?

Back in 1912 Hawaii established a 120 day quarantine policy for carnivorous animals in order to keep rabies out of what was then the Territory of Hawaii.? The rules remained unchanged when Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959 up until 1997 when a 30 day quarantine went into effect ? more lenient, but still a stumbling block for many pet owners.

In 2003 the present ?five days or less program? replaced the need to quarantine pets in Hawaii at all, much to the relief of people who previously found the options of lengthy quarantine or giving away their pets equally untenable.? The new policy is also more in keeping with the warm, friendly and family oriented culture of Hawaii, so it just makes sense all the way around ? yet Hawaii must still be strict to keep the state rabies-free.

Hawaii now puts the burden of proof on the shoulders of pet owners, and they provide clear yet inflexible guidelines on exactly how to go about bringing pets into the state.? It is a lengthy process which can be complicated, and woe to anyone who misses a deadline ? but with careful planning anyone can do it.

The Hawaii State Department of Agriculture Animal Quarantine outlines the process in detail, but here are the main points:

  • Allow at least five months, even though the waiting period is 120 days. The waiting period starts after all the shots and blood work is done and received.
  • Dogs and cats will need original records of vaccinations signed by a veterinarian, and this can be hard to obtain if you have been lax about shots or have moved.
  • After the animals have two rabies vaccinations at least 30 days apart, the blood work is sent to the lab to be checked, and the results are then sent to Hawaii.? At that point you can find out online when the first day your pet is allowed into the state.
  • No more than 14 days before the pets arrive in Hawaii a veterinarian must apply a certain flea/tick preparation to the animals, and no more than 10 days before the vets must prepare a health certificate. Note that these are for the dates you are actually traveling.
  • Pets must arrive by 3:30 pm in order for them to be released directly, otherwise they are transferred to the quarantine site and held up to 5 days (for the ?five days or less? option, which costs $225).

The next hurdle is getting your pet there ? the airlines can only accommodate a few pets on each flight, whether they fly in the passenger compartment, as baggage, or as cargo. Because the pets must get to Hawaii in the afternoon, the morning flights from the mainland book the animal spaces early, and information about pet bookings will not show up when you look online for tickets.

You must make sure that the health certificate includes a statement by the vet that states that your pet can withstand temperatures of 45 degrees, and some airlines will demand a letter to this effect by the vet.? This is because the airlines have made changes to make sure that all pets arrive safely and in good health and can tolerate the cooler (but still climate controlled and pressurized) environment of the cargo hold.? Oddly enough, they do not require anything stating that the animals can withstand high temperatures even though dogs are documented to have died of heat stroke on flights.

If you are flying a big dog (more than 29? from the top of the head to the ground) you may not be able to fly them as baggage on your flight or even as cargo because some plane cargo doors are too small to fit a larger crate.? If you don?t want your dog flown all over and kenneled overnight in some strange city, you must figure out which airlines will fly pets nonstop and still get them to Hawaii by 3:30.

Hawaiian Airlines does not take any dog over 70 lbs as baggage. They can fly a larger dog as cargo (which costs several times as much, even on the same flight), but you must arrange to have a backup contact in Hawaii in case your own flight is delayed.

Alaska, United, and Delta currently either don?t have flights that arrive in time (from Seattle) or have no capacity to fit a large crate, but flights on some of these airlines are available with smaller pets.? All airlines are not equal when it comes to safely transporting animals, so definitely spend time finding out which are the best.

Cats are easier to ship than all but the tiniest dogs, and the cost to fly them varies with airlines, but the airlines allow on a few animals of any kind on each flight (ie three or less). You will have to take them out of their carry-on container and hold them when you go through the security scanners, and because ? unbelievably ? people use pets to smuggle all kinds of things, further tests may be performed to make sure that your pet is not carrying drugs or other contraband. So if your cat will be freaked out by this, do bring a leash of some sort so that the cat can?t get away ? remember, you will be standing there in bare feet with your valuables in bins, and chasing a frightened cat is a nightmare at best

The pets flying as luggage or cargo will need to get to the airport at least three hours early in some cases, and it is advised that you find deep water bowls and freeze water in them overnight so that the pets have water available on the flight as the ice melts.? You are permitted to put any kind of soft bedding in that is absorbent, and familiar blankets etc is always a good idea.

Bailey loves his new home in Hawaii!

My experience:

Overall, it was very positive.? My big dog had to fly cargo on Hawaiian, but they carefully explained their requirements in advance, offered tips to make the pet comfortable, and were friendly.? We were at the airport by 5:30 a.m. to get the dog settled for a 9 a.m. flight.? My cat flew with me as a carry on baggage on Alaska Airlines, and although it was cramped to have her at my feet and my overstuffed large handbag on my lap for six hours it was doable, and the cat was quiet. I arrived in Honolulu about the same time as my dog, and was met at the gate by an official who took the cat to the quarantine office.

Some glitches with family schedules meant that I had to plan last minute alternatives causing me to spend hours on the phone with the airlines, but as it turns out it prevented larger problems since the pet spaces were already booked on the original flights, which would not have accommodated my large dog.

A huge thing to note: the reservation agents often don?t know or don?t understand the pet flight rules themselves.? You need to check and double check the facts.

Finding the Animal Quarantine in Honolulu Airport was not straightforward, even though an agent met me at the gate.? This was experienced by others from different flights as well but is not a big deal unless you are short on time.? The agents in the quarantine office were very pleasant, and watched my bags when I went to pick up the rental car.? I had reserved a minivan in order to make sure that the dog?s crate fit, which turned out to be good because they will not let you take the animals out of the crate while at the airport.

Here were the highlights:

The wonderful, friendly, pet loving staff at the Edgewater Hotel where I stayed with the dog and cat in order to make the early flight. They were not bothered by the chaotic nature of my arrival, didn?t bat an eyelash at the battered old suitcase I brought, they lavished the dog with attention, and were careful with the cat. They took the pet water bowls to the staff lounge and froze them overnight and made sure we had them following the 3:30 a.m. wake up call the morning of my flight. I repacked my bags and left unwanted clothes etc, as well as the disposable litter pan and got no complaints. With winter rates and because pets stay free of charge it was competitively priced, and it felt like a luxurious reward after the packing, moving, planning, and traveling with the pets, but the whole experience was so positive and the staff so professional and friendly that I would do it again even at standard rates.

The vets at NW Veterinary Hospital who squeezed my dog in for the ?letter of acclimation? at the last minute, examined my dog and certified that he could withstand 45 degree temperature, and didn?t charge.

Learning that my cat, who turns into a whirling dervish of teeth and claws in the hands of strangers would be completely docile when I held her for exams and through airline security.

The Edgewater staff, the vets, the inspirational woman named Sandy who helped the young man get his dog from quarantine, the wonderful people where I live who offered to pick me up at the airport and welcomed me with flowers and a nice dinner, and my son who took a couple of days off work to help get me to two airlines with two pets on time, all helped transform what seemed to be an ordeal into what is turning out to be a wonderful adventure.

So to sum it up ? allow plenty of time, read the fine print, double check the airlines, make sure you prepay all fees or arrive with cash, do what you can to make yourself comfortable, and enjoy your new adventure!

Bailey and his new buddy Rango play on the beach everyday, he loves it here!

Crazy House Reviews: Baby Showers for Couples

Boring, traditional baby showers are a thing of the past and more and more families are opting for baby showers for couples. I think this is a great idea as I have often wondered if Dads might feel a little left out considering they do play a huge part in the creation of a child! ?

Games:

Bottle Drinkers: Line the Dads up and give them all a bottle filled with any type of beverage. See which dad-to-be can guzzle it down the fastest. I stumbled across a site a couple of weeks ago that had a six pack of beer container decorated and they filled it with baby bottles filled with beer. I thought it was super cute and funny! You can fill them with whatever you want though. These would be cute sitting on the tables until game time!?

Diaper Relay-See which guests can diaper a baby the quickest. You can also use bags of flour if you don't have a doll. To make it really fun, use cloth diapers instead of disposable!?

Guess the Baby Food: Pass jars of baby food down the line of blind-folded contestants and see who knows their stuff!?

Baby Poop Game: Melt different kinds of candy bars onto the insides of disposable diapers and have guests pass them around and smell them to try and guess what kind of candy bar it is.?

Diaper Raffle: Tell guests to bring a pack of diapers to the shower to be entered for a chance to win a super cool prize! I recently went to a shower that did this. On the invite, you can use a little poem, "A bag of diapers for lil' ol me, would really help mommy to be. So please bring a bag of any size, did I mention it could win you a really great prize???"?

Decor, Food, Etc.?

*Decorate in a gender neutral theme or don't do a theme at all. Some ideas would be sports, tiki, etc. For a sports themed, you can make snack filled centerpieces for the tables like the one included here. This was at a friend of mine's Boston Red Sox themed baby shower! It's even cuter since they named their new son Boston.?

*Finger sandwiches aren't going to cut it for a co-ed shower. Consider a barbecue or maybe a fun Mexican fiesta complete with a taco bar! And make sure you have PLENTY of food to feed these hungry guys!?

*Send everyone home with a little favor box thanking them for coming. Little treat boxes with personalized candy bars, cookies, etc. are a great choice. You can also purchase personalized ribbon for favors to add a special touch!

* Finally, to help you along, you might consider getting a male co-host to help you with planning. It would probably be beneficial to have a guy's input on the games, decor, food, etc.?

Sports 'Free Play' Could Protect Against Youth-Athlete Injuries | Your ...

From Your Health Journal?..?My regular visitors know I love and always promote the Education Week web site and plug their great articles whenever I can. Today, they had a great article called, Sports ?Free Play? Could Protect Against Youth-Athlete Injuries by Bryan Toporek. I placed a small snip here from the article, but recommend all of you to visit the Education Week web site (link provided below) to read the complete article. The article discusses how single-sport specialization and an increase in organized competition could lead to a higher rate of injuries for youth-athletes. This means the more unorganized competition and ?free play? could help protect against youth-athlete injuries. This does make sense, as sometimes, there is a sense of urgency in organized play, competing to be the best, a ?whatever? cost to the athlete to improve performance and outcome. Please visit the Education Week web site for the full story.?

From the article?..

Single-sport specialization and an increase in organized competition could lead to a higher rate of injuries for youth-athletes, according to a study presented at the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science and United States Tennis Association-Tennis Medicine and Injury Conference.

The findings, released to the public this past Friday, suggest that more unorganized competition and ?free play? could help protect against youth-athlete injuries.

Dr. Neeru Jayanthi, an associate professor at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and colleagues investigated 891 youth-athletes in the Chicago area for this study. Out of the pool of participants, 618 of those athletes went to the Loyola University Health System or Lurie Children?s Hospital of Chicago for treatment of sports injuries, while the other 273 were uninjured and came in for sports physicals.

The study included 124 total tennis players, 74 of whom specialized in only tennis.

Among the 74 single-sport tennis players, 65 of them (about 87.5 percent) reported an injury, while only nine did not. The 65 who were injured spent 12.6 hours per week playing organized tennis and only 2.4 hours a week in free play or recreation. Comparatively, the uninjured single-sport tennis players played organized tennis for 9.7 hours per week and spent 4.3 hours per week in free play or recreation. Both the injured and noninjured specialized tennis players spent roughly the same amount of time per week in either organized or recreational play.

Great Ways To Grow Through Self Improvement ... - Goal Setting ...

Are you attempting to live a life of higher quality? These tips can help you improve your own life.

Weight loss is not the only reason that people need to exercise. There are many physical reasons for the need to exercise. When you exercise, your body is stimulated to produce hormones and chemicals that work together to keep you calm and happy.

One way to improve yourself is to discover and emphasize your strengths, while minimizing your weaknesses. Determine what is important to you. Setting high standards for yourself can help you achieve personal development you desire.

TIP! Make concrete plans for your life and take actions to accomplish those goals. There is no point in having dreams of what you want from your life if you?re not prepared to get out there and chase them.

You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. When you make the active decision to change, you are able to direct the course of your self improvement.

Eliminate unnecessary stress from your daily life. Reacting too strongly to negative events will just make you more stressed, which is the last thing you need. Sometimes, circumstances will be not be in your complete control. Taking time to come up with reasonable resolutions will afford you peace of mind.

Therapy is indicated if you feel you cannot deal with your problems. While self-help books help to a certain degree, seeing a therapist has more personalized substance to it. Beyond the professional expertise, one-on-one therapy offers the opportunity for real communication. Books don?t offer the opportunity for discussion that psychiatrists can.

TIP! Reduce the stress in your life. When something happens try not to go overboard and over-react.

If you are not able to deal with your own life, you cannot help the ones around you. Whatever point you may be at on your journey, it is important to properly care for yourself.

Sexual capitol is an important new trait that?s being researched. This doesn?t mean you need to use your sexuality as a means of getting the results you desire. Instead, use your charm. Since some people do not have good skills socially, it will help them get farther in certain life aspects.

Try to live wisely and humbly. Learn from your mistakes and past situations that you are faced with every day and learn to recognize circumstances that you are unable to change. You will be less likely to bit off more than you can chew if you remain modest. Wisdom can help you better your future by helping you learn from your past.

TIP! You need to have an emergency fund. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund.

Try to determine what things matter most in your life and devote your attention to them. The key to attaining inner peace is knowing what really matters and finding the good in what you have.

Before you begin working on your self improvement, you first need to understand your place in the universe. When you accept that you are but a tiny speck in the scope of our universe, you can begin to realize that there is much to learn if you hope to advance. By instilling these ideas in your brain, you will be more open to improving yourself and learning new information.

Plenty of employers are more concerned with the fact that you have a degree, rather than what school you attended. Of course, there are some exceptions, such as the large financial institutions. Just get a college degree so that doors will open to you.

TIP! Many people are unaware that diet can affect feelings of depression, as an increase in consumption of complex carbohydrates can help. If you do not have an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates in your diet, your serotonin can become depleted.

We are all imperfect humans and we make mistakes in our choices every now and then, such as eating the wrong foods. Don?t obsess over the minor details of life all the time as stress is no better for you than a piece of chocolate is.

A positive attitude can be a powerful way to grow your spiritual nature. Living life under the burden of bad or negative attitudes will continue to hold you back, and in fact, will undo all your personal improvement efforts. Try remaining positive so that you can reach your goals.

Exercise can benefit almost anyone, even those who are not trying to shed excess weight. There are many reason you should do physical exercise. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, improving your mood and keeping you calm.

TIP! Write out a little pep talk for yourself. Write a list of each of your good points and attributes on an index card.

When you are feeling angry, take time out and slowly count to 10 prior to saying anything. Think of something that is calming and take a breath. Make your best effort to stay calm and say only what you need to.

The goals you set out for your personal development program need to be measurable and specific. If you have individually defined goals, you can break down your journey toward each goal into steps that you can take to achieve it. By meeting challenges, experiencing success will shortly follow.

Every champion needs a coach, so get someone to help you. Treat this person as a mentor and learn as much as you can from him. Everyone is responsible for showing how to live well to others. How can they expect to do their best without doing this? A great coach is behind every great champion.

TIP! Not only is getting organized an achievement in itself, but it will help you to meet other goals faster. By taking a large goal and breaking it down to more manageable segments, you will see that completing your goals has become easier.

Therapy is indicated if you feel you cannot deal with your problems. While self-help books help to a certain degree, seeing a therapist has more personalized substance to it. Even the simple act of having someone impartial that you can talk to can improve your chances for success. A self-help book simply cannot provide the human interaction afforded by a therapist or counselor.

Building an effective personal development routine is not, as you might now agree, all that tough. Self improvement can bring you happiness and well-being, all through simply taking initiative for your own life.

When you are pursuing your personal development goals, having setbacks can be discouraging and make you feel like a failure. The truth about failure is that it is a learning experience in disguise. Failure helps you figure out what you are good at and what needs improvement. Try to see every failure as an accomplishment, since you will have learned more about yourself.

TIP! Everyone makes unhealthy food choices every now and then. The stress that you can cause yourself by worrying about going off diet and consuming extra calories can be as unhealthy for you as actually eating a chocolate candy bar.

While you may find the topic of Goal Setting overwhelming, it?s really pretty basic when you have the right information. If you know all you can you will win in the end. This piece is great for navigating the sometimes confusing landscape of Goal Setting.

Sources say 10 to 15 USC football players involved in locker-room altercation after Sun Bowl loss

Moments after USC lost to Georgia Tech 21-7 in the Sun Bowl, about 10 to 15 Trojans players were involved in a locker room altercation, according to sources. Inside USC with Scott Wolf

The incident started when some freshmen questioned the leadership of the team's seniors and whether they gave 100 percent effort for the Sun Bowl. This led to an argument that eventually escalated according to witnesses.

"It was one of the worst things I've seen in a locker room," said a player who did not wish to be identified.

Freshman offensive tackle Zach Banner did not wish to discuss the incident but said, "It's going to be a whole new family atmosphere next season and you can quote me on that. For the seniors, it's terrible."

Coach Lane Kiffin could not be reached for comment.

Sources said cornerback Nickell Robey informed teammates in the locker room he would turn pro although he waited almost two weeks to make the public announcement.
