2012 Ford Focus Sedan TDCi Titanium Review

2012 FORD FOCUS REVIEW

Vehicle Style: Small sedan
Price: $36,590 (plus on-roads)
Fuel Economy (claimed): 5.5 l/100km
Fuel Economy (tested): 6.8 l/100km

OVERVIEW

We have to be honest here: the last Focus was pretty average. It drove well enough, but that alone wasn?t enough to compensate for the cheap interior plastics and sometimes-patchy build.

Its replacement however is worlds apart. Not only is the new Focus a cracking drive and a sharp looker, it?s now right near the top of its segment for interior quality.

The Mk VI Golf has long been recognised as the most nicely-finished in the small car segment. But have a look at the new Focus: it?s a genuine challenge for top-dog status.

INTERIOR

Quality: Soft plastic surfaces are plentiful and give the Focus Titanium?s cabin an upmarket ambience.

Interior fittings and switchgear feel secure, solid and well-engineered, and the low-rent furnishings of the old Focus have well-and-truly been consigned to history.

Aside from a small piece of foam that had lifted up between the dashboard and windscreen, the Focus? build quality was excellent.

Comfort: Thickly-bolstered front seats give great lateral support, and the powered driver?s seat and tilt/reach adjustable steering column allows a relaxed, natural driving position.

In the Titanium, both front seats are heated - but the passenger misses out on power adjustment.

The back seats have good under-thigh support and a reasonably comfortable centre position, however headroom and knee-room are in short supply. The C-pillar also comes quite close to outboard passenger?s heads.

Equipment: The Titanium comes loaded with an abundance of classy features and technologies as standard - ones, just a short while ago, you would only ever have expected on a premium class saloon. It puts its main rivals, the VW Golf and Jetta, to shame.

Advanced features like radar-assisted cruise control, xenon headlamps, a self-parking system, front and rear parking sensors and a proximity key are all standard-issue on the Titanium.

Passenger comfort is maintained by dual-zone climate control, and there?s a premium nine-speaker Sony audio system with USB input, iPod connectivity and Bluetooth integration.

Storage: In the Titanium, boot space is compromised by the extra bulk of the (non-space-saver) steel spare, which pushes up the boot floor and reduces cargo capacity to just 372 litres.

That?s not much more than the average hatchback.

In-cabin storage is good though, with door bins front and rear, a deep centre console box, sizable glovebox, map pockets and sunglasses holder. There are also four cupholders - two in the front, two in the back.

ON THE ROAD

Driveability: The 2.0 litre Duratorq turbodiesel inline four puts out 120kW and 340Nm: solid numbers for an engine its size.

The bulk of its torque is available between 2000rpm and 3250rpm, which translates into superb off-idle tractability.

And, thanks to that abundant torque, you can lug it around in higher gears without complaint - it is in fact the diesel?s preferred mode of operation.

It?s very well-matched to the six-speed twin-clutch automatic (the only transmission available with the diesel Focus) which operates smoothly and decisively for both upshifts and downshifts. About town, or on the highway, the Focus feels swift and strong underfoot.

Sport mode livens up gearshifts and keeps revs higher, but in our opinion the Focus diesel is best left to its own devices in regular ol? Drive.

There?s also a manual shift facility built into the twin-clutch trans, but its fiddly rocker-switch gear selector can be a pain to use.

Refinement: The Focus is quite well isolated from wind and mechanical noise, but on the Titanium?s low-profile rubber and 18-inch wheels there?s some tyre roar evident on coarser surfaces.

Suspension: There?s no doubting the Focus platform?s dynamic prowess. It provides crisp turn-in when cornering, flat neutral handling and good grip from the 18-inch tyres. A brake-based pseudo-LSD helps reduce wheelspin under power.

However, like some others in the small car class, the Titanium?s suspension is on the firmer side (I found it too firm) - it leans to a sporting feel over comfort.

Initial bump-response is quite sharp, and bumps and shocks from badly maintained streets and rural backroads can be transmitted into the body.

We get the feeling that smaller-diameter wheels would improve the Titanium?s ride-quality markedly, as would softer dampers.

Braking: There are disc brakes behind each wheel, and the usual array of electronic traction aids (stability control, ABS, EBD, brake assist) give the Focus good stopping ability.

Pedal response is good, as is the pedal ?feel?.

SAFETY

ANCAP rating: Five stars

Safety features: Passenger safety is provided by dual front airbags and side thorax airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as standard side curtain airbags for the first and second row seats.

Also standard is ABS with EBD and emergency brake assist. Dynamic stability control and traction control are standard.

WARRANTY AND SERVICING

Warranty: 3 years/unlimited kilometres.

Service costs: Servicing intervals are set for every 12 months or 15,000km, with the price of the first three services capped to $335 each.

The first major service is due at 60,000km, and costs $905 under Ford?s myFord capped price servicing scheme.

HOW IT COMPARES | VALUE FOR MONEY

Volkswagen Jetta 103TDI Comfortline ($34,990) - A little cheaper than the Focus Titanium, but less well-equipped and not as powerful. In its favour is a back seat that?s marginally roomier than the Focus, and a boot that?s a more usable size. (see Jetta reviews)

Holden Cruze CDX Diesel ($30,740) - Significantly more affordable than the Focus, but also much less-appealing from an interior refinement standpoint.

Handling is also less impressive than the Focus, as is its standard equipment list. (see Cruze reviews)

Note: all prices are Manufacturer?s List Price and do not include dealer delivery or on-road costs.

TMR VERDICT | OVERALL

Ford?s dynamic and appealingly-styled new Focus Titanium is very impressive, with few shortcomings (such as that tiny boot and firm ride).

It?s rather expensive for a small car, but the quality and sophistication of the interior, an excellent powertrain and a premium specification list can justify the expense.

If the Titanium stretches the budget however, each in the Focus range is worth a careful look: Ford?s Focus is certainly one the best buys in the segment at the moment.

Newman, Independence college sign agreement on education program

Newman University and Independence Community College have signed a dual admissions agreement for students seeking degrees in elementary education.

Under the terms of the deal, ICC students who graduate with an associate degree in arts or science are given a scholarship of $3,000 per year to attend Newman.

Newman director of communications Kelly Snedden said that it made sense for the two schools to partner.

?It streamlines the credit hours students take (at ICC) so they take the right classes to transfer,? Snedden said. ?We know the need for these kids to have access to a four-year-degree program.?

Students must declare that they plan on transferring to Newman at least one year before graduation.

Newman recently signed similar arrangements with Coffeyville Community College and Labette Community College. Newman provost Michael Austin said the three schools will feed into Newman?s eastern Kansas elementary education program.

Newman already has similar agreements with Dodge City, Butler, Cowley, Pratt and Hutchinson community colleges. In addition to the $3,000 annual scholarship agreement with the schools, Newman also offers a $1,500 per year scholarship for transfers from those community colleges, for a total of $4,500 per year.

?We?re trying to make it as affordable as possible,? Austin said.

NASA probes reach moon for gravity-mapping mission

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Sun Jan 1, 2012 7:42pm EST

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Two robotic probes began orbiting the moon Sunday in preparation for an unprecedented mission to map the lunar interior.

NASA's twin Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory, or GRAIL, spacecraft wrapped up 2.6-million-mile journey to put themselves into lunar orbit on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the next two months, the probes' 34-mile-high orbits will be adjusted to get them into optimal position to measure the pushes and pulls of the moon's gravity, data that scientists can use to model what is inside the moon.

"Pop the bubbly and toast the moon," NASA wrote on its Twitter feed after the first GRAIL spacecraft finished a 40-minute braking maneuver at 5 p.m. EST (22:00 GMT) on New Year's Eve.

The second spacecraft followed suit 25 hours later. Both are needed for the intricate gravity-mapping mission scheduled to begin in March.

"Everything is looking good," NASA wrote as ground control teams received radio signals Sunday confirming the second spacecraft's arrival. "It's going to be a great 2012."

Over the next two months, the probes' orbits will be tweaked until they are flying in formation low over the lunar poles. As the spacecraft fly over denser regions of the moon, they will speed up slightly in response to the extra gravitational tugs.

By constantly measuring changes in the distance between the two craft, scientists can create a gravity map of the moon. The changes in speed will be as subtle as a fraction of a micron per second. A micron is about the width of a red blood cell.

The data will be used to model the moon's interior, a key piece of information still missing despite more than 100 previous missions to the moon, including six human expeditions during NASA's 1969-1972 Apollo program.

Scientists believe the moon formed when an object about the size of Mars smashed into Earth shortly after the formation of the solar system about 4.5 billion years ago. But questions about how the moon evolved remain.

One longstanding question is why the far side of the moon is so different from the side that permanently faces Earth. The near side is filled with large, dark plains formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, while the far side is virtually all highlands.

The mission is scheduled to last 82 days, but if the solar-powered probes, built by Lockheed Martin Corp, survive beyond the next lunar eclipse in June, the $496 million mission could be extended for a more detailed mapping survey.

TV show on Muslims takes on Sept. 11 attacks (AP)

NEW YORK ? A television show about members of a Muslim community in Michigan is focusing what may be its second-to-last episode almost entirely on the conflicted feelings that its featured participants have about marking anniversaries of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The episode of TLC's "All-American Muslim" airs Sunday (10 p.m. EST). The series attracted attention earlier this month when a conservative Christian group called on advertisers to boycott the series, calling it "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

Two companies, the Lowe's home improvement chain and travel planning website Kayak.com, announced they were pulling ads. TLC hasn't said how many companies responded to the Florida Family Association's call to stop sponsoring the show. The controversy prompted a backlash of people protesting against Lowe's. Some new advertisers have signed on since then, TLC General Manager Amy Winter said Thursday.

Filming for the reality TV series took place during commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Both TLC and the show's characters, Muslims living in and around Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit at the heart of one of the largest Arab-American populations outside the Middle East, wanted to address the topic, Winter said.

"I'm very proud of it," she said. "What you'll see in there is a community with a range of emotions that they express over what was probably one of the most pivotal moments in our nation's history."

Mike Jaafar, a deputy sheriff who participated in a Sept. 11 memorial service at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, helped law enforcement prepare for any problems related to the anniversary. He choked up when recalling how police officers in New York City were killed as they tried to rescue people at the World Trade Center.

"You think about your guys who work for you, going into a building and not coming home," he said.

Nawal Auode was a high school sophomore on Sept. 11, 2001, when her mother called to say she was picking her up at school. Her mother found out about the attacks as she was passing out flyers to advertise a day care center and a man spit at her and ordered her off his porch.

"It was the first time I realized that people looked at me as less American," said Suehaila Amen. "As a person who was born and raised in this country, it was very difficult."

Auode said she dreads the anniversary of the attacks because of a sense that members of her community have to defend themselves for something they had nothing to do with.

That's at the root of the biggest conflict in Sunday's episode. One woman talks about how important it was to attend a Sept. 11 commemoration, but her adult-age children didn't want to go.

One man, Bilal Amen, traveled to New York City to visit the Sept. 11 memorial because, he said, "I want to see the place that changed my life."

Another woman, Nina Bazzy, spoke angrily about the Sept. 11 terrorists and said they weren't real Muslims because "a real Muslim would not do anything like that." She said Osama bin Laden made life difficult for many Muslims in the United States.

"He ruined it for us," Bazzy said. "He ruined it for our kids. He made us scared in our own homes."

"All-American Muslim" ends its eight-episode first season on Jan. 8. Its ratings are considered disappointing for TLC, and the attention caused by this month's controversy didn't improve them. Based on ratings alone, a second season would be considered unlikely. Working in its favor is TLC's pride in a series that spotlights communities that many viewers aren't familiar with.

TLC hasn't made a decision on the show's future and its executives will meet soon to consider it, Winter said.
