Newman, Independence college sign agreement on education program

Newman University and Independence Community College have signed a dual admissions agreement for students seeking degrees in elementary education.

Under the terms of the deal, ICC students who graduate with an associate degree in arts or science are given a scholarship of $3,000 per year to attend Newman.

Newman director of communications Kelly Snedden said that it made sense for the two schools to partner.

?It streamlines the credit hours students take (at ICC) so they take the right classes to transfer,? Snedden said. ?We know the need for these kids to have access to a four-year-degree program.?

Students must declare that they plan on transferring to Newman at least one year before graduation.

Newman recently signed similar arrangements with Coffeyville Community College and Labette Community College. Newman provost Michael Austin said the three schools will feed into Newman?s eastern Kansas elementary education program.

Newman already has similar agreements with Dodge City, Butler, Cowley, Pratt and Hutchinson community colleges. In addition to the $3,000 annual scholarship agreement with the schools, Newman also offers a $1,500 per year scholarship for transfers from those community colleges, for a total of $4,500 per year.

?We?re trying to make it as affordable as possible,? Austin said.
