A few public libraries across the country refuse to stock the adult bestseller ?Fifty Shades of Grey,? but the Dallas public library and most other North Texas libraries have put it on their shelves and are experiencing high demand among their readers. None of them are reporting complaints about the book, written by a woman named E.L. James.
The Dallas Public Library has bought 93 copies of Grey, which is the fictional story of a naive college girl?s sexual awakening. She meets an older man who introduces her to the erotic world of bondage and dominant-submissive sexual relationships. The book currently sits stop the New York Times bestseller list .
Kris Sweckard, interim director of Dallas Public Library, reported Tuesday that 467 readers have put ?holds? on Grey, which means they are waiting to check it out. ?That?s a lot,? he said.
Same story in Plano (29 copies and 129 holds), Garland (12 copies and 95 holds), Richardson (six copies and 65 holds) and Irving (eight copies and 73 holds).
?It?s not Harry Potter, but it?s popular,? said Chris Dobson, director of Irving Public Library. ?It?s the libraian?s personal judgment on what we should carry.?
None of the libraries contacted by The Dallas Morning News?could produce written policies on stocking erotica.
?We tend not to collect that genre (erotica),? said Julie Torstad, Plano library?s technical services manager. ?But we do stock best sellers in high demand.?
The Mesquite Public Library has not ordered Grey, but an information desk librarian said patrons have been asking for it. Jeannie Johnson, Mesquite?s library director, did not return phone calls to talk about the book.
Some reviewers have panned Grey as pornographic and poorly written. And for those reasons, some libraries have not ordered it. The New York Times?reported that the Gwinnett County Public Library in the Atlanta area declined to provide Grey at it?s 15 branches because the graphic content violates its no-erotica policy.
Susan Rose, a spokeswoman for city of Irving, said the hoopla surrounding Grey led her to go out and get a copy. ?I didn?t know what I was getting myself into,? she said.
