A new method used to scan the atmosphere of a distant "hot Jupiter" world could eventually reveal insights about many distant alien planets ? including, perhaps, whether or not they support life, the researchers added.

"If we could detect gases like oxygen, these could point to biological activity," study co-author Ignas Snellen, an astronomer at Leiden University in the Netherlands, told SPACE.com.

A new look at exoplanet atmospheres

Scientists have analyzed the atmospheres of exoplanets before, but only when those worlds passed in front of their parent stars, much like Venus did during its recent transit of the sun.

The change in the light of a star as it streams through an exoplanet's atmosphere can reveal details about the air's composition. Different molecules absorb light in distinct ways, resulting in patterns known as spectra that allow scientists to identify what they are. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

Now scientists have for the first time analyzed the atmosphere of an exoplanet that, like most such alien worlds, does not pass between its star and Earth.

The planet in question is Tau Bo?tis b, one of the first exoplanets to be discovered back in 1996 and one of the nearest exoplanets to Earth known, at about 51 light-years away. The world is a "hot Jupiter" ? a gas giant orbiting very close to its parent star.

The exoplanet's parent star, Tau Bo?tis, is easily visible with the naked eye, but the planet is not. Up to now, Tau Bo?tis b was only detectable through its gravitational pull on the star.

An international team caught the faint infrared glow from Tau Bo?tis b using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT).

"We were able to study the spectrum of the system in much more detail than has been possible before," study lead author Matteo Brogi, of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands, said in a statement. "Only about 0.01 percent of the light we see comes from the planet, and the rest from the star, so this was not easy."

Three Years Of Probation, No Prison For ... - Yeshiva World News

Eliyahu Werdesheim, the member of the Orthodox Jewish citizens? watch group who was convicted of assaulting a black teenager in Northwest Baltimore, avoided a prison sentence Wednesday and will serve three years probation.

He had faced up to 10 years in prison for the second-degree assault of then-15-year-old Corey Ausby in the November 2010 attack. Werdesheim, now 24, was also sentenced by Baltimore Circuit Judge Pamela J. White to three years of probation for false imprisonment, a sentence he can serve concurrently with the assault term.

Werdesheim and his now-22-year-old brother, Avi ? who was cleared of all charges ? were headed home on Nov. 19, 2010 around noon when they responded to a call from the patrol group, Shomrim, about a suspicious person in Park Heights.

The case sparked racial tension among the neighborhood?s ethnic groups.

Werdesheim also had been charged with carrying a deadly weapon, but he was cleared on that charge. The weapon in question was a walkie-talkie that Werdesheim allegedly used to strike Ausby in the head.

R. Kelly Planned Best Of Both Worlds Collabo With Tupac Before Jay-Z

In his upcoming 'Soulacoaster' autobiography, R&B great remembers planning to record with 'Pac and making the Notorious B.I.G. cry.

R. Kelly and Jay-Z changed the landscape of hip-hop and R&B when they dropped their 2002 tag-team album Best of Both Worlds, but according to the Pied Piper, it was the late Tupac Shakur who originally sparked that genre-melding idea.

On Tuesday Rolling Stone ran an excerpt from Kellz's upcoming autobiography, "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me," and in the chapter titled "Yo Pac! Yo Biggie!" the singer expresses his admiration for the two slain rap greats.

Kelly recalls a 1996 meeting with 'Pac in front of a hotel frequented by rappers and other music industry types. He says they planned to release a collaborative album at that meeting, but the idea came to a tragic end after Shakur was murdered later that year.

"Come September, and it looked like my schedule was opening up just before the holidays. I set up a meeting with Pac for us to plot our strategy, get firm dates and make the musical bomb that we both know would explode all around the world," Kelly wrote. "But another bomb exploded that no one saw coming."

Though he never got the chance to work with Shakur, Kelly and the Notorious B.I.G. did log in a few recording sessions. In 1995 Biggie made a cameo on the singer's "(You to Be) Be Happy," and they hooked up again shortly before B.I.G. was murdered, on 1997's "F--- You Tonight."

R. Kelly described Biggie as a kindred spirit of sorts who appreciated R&B music in ways that most rappers did not. After a night of partying, Kelly remembers playing a piano in a Detroit hotel lobby, writing the chords to what would soon become his Grammy Award-winning single "I Believe I Can Fly." According to the singer, Biggie rolled into the lobby and Kelly played a bare version of the song for his rapper friend, who immediately began to sing praises.

"I'm gonna tell you right now, B, that's a smash. That's a big hit right there. That's a Grammy winner, Rob," Kelly recalled a tearful B.I.G. saying. "They gonna be playing that when you and I have moved on to the other side of time."

"Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me" is due out on June 28.

Mozilla has released a new version of Firefox for Android phones with a redesigned interface, Flash support, and various speed improvements. It's the latest maneuver in what is sure to be a seriously competitive space over the next few years: mobile browsers.

As the web becomes more accessible to mobile devices, people will want to do with their phones what they do already with their desktops and notebooks. That means add-ons for personalization, options for how things are displayed, and the same level of security and usability we have on our full-size browsers.

Mozilla's Firefox was the gold standard on desktop OSes for the PC explosion over the last decade, though it has seen stiff competition lately from Google?Chrome and (on mobile) Apple's?Safari. Without delving too far into the features and shortcomings of these browsers, it can be said that they are only just beginning to battle on the mobile front as smartphones and tablets become mainstream -- and more than that, become as powerful and usable as our PCs.

Firefox on Android has a number of handy add-ons and supports Flash, and the new UI is definitely superior to the built-in browser in Android 4.0. Columns were detected better, text was more readable, and sites were generally rendered as a happy medium between the original layout and a slightly more mobile-friendly one. Interestingly, Flash loaded and ran properly on my HTC One V, a mid-range device with extra software on it, while on a brand-new Galaxy Nexus, it had trouble.

It also supports newer web functions like Do Not Track and various security protocols, and while doing your banking with a web app on your mobile probably still isn't a good idea, it's good to see the new standards being put into practice.

Google will reportedly be bringing Chrome to Android in a big way soon, perhaps even this week at their I/O conference, but until they make that move, Firefox is looking like a no-brainer to install on your Android phone. It's free on the Play Store.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken to Twitter to call me out personally for a joke included at the bottom of a Saturday item regarding Irsay?s position that marketing rights aren?t holding up an eventual contract with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Since most of the latest available pictures of Luck show him wearing a mortar board and a gown tied and draped over his shoulders like an Andy Bernard sweater, and given that the topic of the item was Luck?s marketing rights via the poorly-crafted tweets of Jim Irsay, I closed with this:? ?Luck likely will be free to endorse whatever he wants to endorse, including the use of images of his Stanford graduation to be included in a campaign for online courses aimed at teaching rich, middle-aged white guys how to type legibly on Twitter.?

It was a slap at Irsay?s notorious habit of oft-indecipherable Twitter messages, and using the term ?rich, middle-aged white guys? was aimed at describing Irsay?s overall demographic.

Irsay didn?t see it that way.? On Monday morning, Irsay started the debate with this:

Turkey says Syria downed jet in international airspace

Turkey on Sunday accused Syria of shooting down one of its warplanes in international airspace, as a watchdog said the Damascus regime suffered new setbacks and violence reached new heights.

"According to our conclusions, our plane was shot down in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told TRT television.

Syria has said it downed the F-4 phantom jet on Friday after it violated its airspace, and on Saturday Turkey acknowledged the plane may have done so in comments seen as a bid to cool tensions between the former allies.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were killed, including 16 troops, in clashes with rebel fighters in Syria on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

"The clashes happened almost simultaneously at dawn," in the northern province of Aleppo bordering Turkey, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman of told AFP.

The fighting took place in the town of Dara Aza, and at military checkpoints near the town of Al-Atarib and the village of Kafr Halab, the Britain-based watchdog said.

It reported that following an attack on an artillery battalion, a number of soldiers defected, taking with them a large quantity of weapons.

And, in another setback for the embattled regime of President Bashar al-Assad, rebels captured 11 government soldiers in the central province of Damascus, it added.

"This is one of the bloodiest weeks in the conflict," Abdel Rahman said.

According to the Observatory's figures, 94 people were killed in Syria on Monday, 62 on Tuesday, 88 on Wednesday, 168 on Thursday, 116 on Friday and 116 on Saturday.

"It's like we are in a war," Abdel Rahman said. "Sometimes when two countries are at war, not even 20 people are killed a day. But now in Syria it has become normal to have 100 killed each day."

The mounting death toll was a result of the international community's inability to agree on a way to resolve the crisis, he said.

"The UN observers have suspended their mission and this is a very bad decision. They are just staying in Syria and not going out to observe," said Abdel Rahman.

"Either go out and observe properly or leave," he said, his frustration palpable.

Sunday's developments come after a bad week for the Assad regime.

On Thursday, a Syrian pilot was granted asylum in neighbouring Jordan after flying his MiG-25 fighter across the border.

Meanwhile, Iran, Assad's staunchest ally, called on Damascus and Ankara to show restraint after the shooting down of the Turkish warplane by Syria.

Tehran "asks both sides to show calm and restraint, and hopes that with tact and tolerance and dialogue this issue will be evaluated and through a peaceful resolution, tranquillity and stability will be preserved in the region," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying.

He made the appeal in a telephone conversation late Saturday with Davutoglu.

Anti-aircraft batteries hit the jet as it flew low and fast about a kilometre (less than a mile) from the coast over Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian military spokesman said, adding it was unidentified at the time.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had expressed his "deep concern" over the incident in a telephone conversation with Davutoglu, a spokesman said.

NATO member Turkey acknowledged one of its warplanes may have violated Syrian airspace, but its muted response has been seen as a bid to take the tension out of the latest rift between the former allies.

Turkey-Syria relations have already been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which rights activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

Meanwhile, a Russian ship that tried to deliver attack helicopters to Syria entered the northern port of Murmansk on Sunday after being forced to turn back when news of its mission was leaked.

An unnamed Russian diplomatic source said the ship would soon try again to make the highly controversial delivery under the Russian flag.

The switch appears to be an attempt to avoid security inspections that come when sailing under the flag of a third country.

Russia says the Soviet-era Mi-25 helicopters are being returned to Syria after undergoing repairs under a contract that could not be breached.

The Alaed was forced to turn back after its mission was initially mentioned by the US State Department and then reported in the British press.

Those reports prompted the ship's British insurer to withdraw coverage, effectively barring it from entering any other ports on its journey.

Hollande may lose euro battle as Merkel holds firm

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande may have set himself up for a fall this week, as Germany's Angela Merkel shows no sign of yielding to his push to provide more financing guarantees to stabilize the euro zone.

The Socialist leader has raised the stakes for a June 28-29 European Union summit with his drive for a bank deposit guarantee scheme to protect euro zone savers and governments and for steps towards mutualizing debt and reviving growth.

He is also backing a push by Italy to let the bloc's bailout fund buy troubled states' sovereign bonds on the secondary market without having to invoke emergency procedures, as a way to curb their borrowing costs and fight speculation.

Public sparring between Hollande and Merkel, who will not consider such steps before euro states sign up to much deeper fiscal integration, suggests he is in for a blunt reminder that as long as it holds the cheque book Berlin calls the shots.

In a pointed, if indirect, exchange at a news conference in Rome last Friday, Hollande said there must be more solidarity in Europe before countries hand over more sovereignty over their national budgets, while Merkel said she would not accept extra liabilities without control.

As well as potentially damaging Hollande's image at home, a failure to get Merkel to bend may also spook financial markets which are looking for firm action to stem spiraling bank woes in Spain and underpin the euro.

"There is a real conflict here and the future of Europe is at stake," said a French economist who asked not to be named because he informally advises the five-week-old government.

"Hollande has exerted the maximum pressure on Merkel but if she remains intransigent and only agrees to the growth pact, I believe he will cave in and give her what she wants. He is not the type to get into an arm wrestle or serious clash over this."

Hollande has invited Merkel to Paris for a working dinner on Wednesday, the eve of the two-day Brussels summit, for a last push to square their widely differing positions.

"We will be working with our German partners on a compromise up until the very last minute," a French source said on Sunday.

As things stand, the summit looks set to agree to Hollande's proposal for a growth package worth 130 billion euros ($162.96 billion) in joint bonds to fund infrastructure projects, a redirection of EU regional development funds and a capital increase to give the European Investment Bank more firepower.

In return, Hollande is expected to go along with a 10-year road map Merkel wants towards deeper political and fiscal integration among the 17 euro zone states.

The growth pact should allow Hollande to save some face, and a strong signal of intent on deeper integration could win EU leaders some time from impatient financial markets.

With credit rating agencies concerned about his commitment to budget discipline, Hollande must also avoid drifting away from Berlin and siding too strongly with debt-laden "Club Med" southern states.

He has ditched an initial idea of pushing for more flexibility on deficit targets for France, but is resisting European and market pressure to carry out German-style structural reform of French labor markets and welfare benefits.

"He is testing the ground because it's the start of his term. But pretty soon he's going to fall into line behind Merkel," said the French economist.

Merkel sent Hollande a stern reminder last week of Germany's hegemony in Europe by highlighting France's economic weakness.

A German diplomatic source said Hollande had nothing to gain from playing hardball after Friday. "We will find a compromise," he said. ($1 = 0.7977 euros)

But elite swimmers and their coaches have long argued over which arm motion is more likely to propel an aquatic star toward a medal.

A university research study has picked a winner. A team supervised by a Johns Hopkins fluid dynamics expert has found that the deep catch stroke, resembling a paddle, has the edge over sculling, the bent-arm, propeller-inspired motion.

"This is a result that is simple but sweet, which is something we usually struggle to arrive at in research," said Rajat Mittal, a mechanical engineering professor at Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering. "The deep catch stroke is more efficient and effective than the sculling stroke."

The team then ran computer simulations to study the flow of fluid around the arm and the forces that acted upon the limb. Each simulation involved about 4 million degrees of freedom and required thousands of hours of computer processing time.

The findings concerning the deep catch and sculling strokes were featured in the doctoral thesis of Alfred von Loebbecke, who studied under Mittal, and in a report by Loebbecke and Mittal that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.

Mittal, a recreational swimmer, joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2009. Russell Mark, the biomechanics coordinator of USA Swimming, was intrigued, and he provided Mittal's team with underwater videos of top swimmers and startup funding. With this support, Mittal and Loebbecke collaborated on studies of the "dolphin kick" used in butterfly events and, increasingly, during starts and turns in freestyle and backstroke races.

After completing that study for USA Swimming, Mittal's team turned its attention to the debate among top coaches about the merits of deep catch and sculling strokes.

In the 1960s, the sculling stroke gained popularity thanks to the late James "Doc" Counsilman, then the head men's swimming coach at Indiana University. Counsilman, highly regarded for his science-based approach to swimming stroke mechanics, also was head coach of the U.S. men's swim team that won a combined 21 gold medals in the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games. Counsilman encouraged his swimmers to use the propeller-like sculling stroke, in which the elbow is raised to a higher position and the arm moves inward and outward in an S-shaped, propeller-like pattern during the propulsion phase of the stroke, when the swimmer's hand is pushing on the water.

While supervising the current study, Johns Hopkins' Mittal considered Counsilman's reasoning. "A propeller, when it rotates, is producing a lift force, and it is that lift force that pushes a boat forward," Mittal said. "Counsilman believed that to travel efficiently in a fluid, a swimmer should be using lift forces."

This contradicted the advice given by many swimming instructors.

"In the past, the analogy for a swimming stroke was that it was like a paddle in a boat: put the paddle in the water, push it back as hard as possible," Mittal said. "This is called drag-based propulsion. You're actually dragging the water back, and the water drags you forward."

Counsilman insisted that the lift force -- generated by that propeller-like movement -- was a more effective way of producing thrust than drag force. But Mittal and Loebbecke's research suggests that the fluid dynamics of this stroke are more complicated than the renowned coach had imagined.

"Sculling, in my view, is a swimming stroke that is based on an incomplete understanding of fluid mechanics," Mittal said. "We found that Doc Counsilman was not correct overall about the sculling, but in some ways he was more correct than he would have ever thought. We did find that lift is indeed a major component in thrust production for both strokes, and that certainly indicates that the arm does not behave simply like a paddle. However, the simulations also indicate that exaggerated sculling motions, which are designed to enhance and exploit lift, actually reduce both the lift and drag contributions to thrust. So, lift is in fact important, but not in the way envisioned by these early coaches who were trying to bring fluid mechanics into swimming."

Mittal has shared his findings with USA Swimming. He also pointed out that many top swimmers use variations of the classic deep catch and sculling strokes.

Outside of competitive swimming, Mittal's findings could be useful in designing exoskeleton suits that the U.S. Navy is seeking to help elite military forces swim more quickly and efficiently.

At the same time, Mittal said, the research could have more down-to-earth applications by steering recreational swimmers toward the most effective strokes.

"People sometimes stop swimming because they feel they are not doing it well enough," he said. "If this research can help recreational swimmers swim more effectively and feel better about their swimming at an early stage, I think that could have an impact on health and fitness."
